Build The World You Want

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve viewed the world around us and thought, “why don’t we do ‘x’/y/z’ instead of what we’re doing? Wouldn’t that be better?” That’s always applied to everything in my life. Everywhere I look, the wheels turn as I see what could be better in some way.

Sometimes it was about a vision for the future we’d all been sold as kids. Think of the idealized “world of tomorrow” stuff from all the old movies and TV shows from the early 20th century on up. When I was a kid (a billion years ago in the Cretaceous Period, I think), I fully expected that by the turn of the 21st century, we would have not only colonized the moon and at least had manned missions to Mars by the 2020s. Now obviously none of that has happened, but still closer to home here on this little blue marble we live on, there’s a lot that we can do to make our lives better.

A lunar colony we never got

Another part of this is much simpler though. It’s about how we treat people — how we treat our friends, our family, our neighbors, and even perfect strangers. Instead of being so focused on the issues that divide us, let’s focus on the things that we all have in common, regardless of race, gender, religion, nationality, sexual identity, etc. We’re all here sharing this little blue marble hurtling through the void, so let’s act like it and treat others with the same respect we want to be given.

So this is some of what I’m talking about when I say to “build the world you want.”

This is a topic I’ll likely touch on from time to time here, but I wanted to make it clear what we’re all about here. We should all want a better world. Let’s get out there and build it together, one little bit at a time. Start with your room, your apartment, your house, your neighborhood, your town, or your city. Discuss it with your friends, your neighbors, your family, and your online communities. Write and create and share in whatever format or medium you can work in, in reality or in virtual reality.

Tell me in the comments below if you have ideas for making your own corner of the world a little bit better in some way.
